Singer/songwriter/performer Derrick Scott has embarked on a musical gospel mission. As the old saying goes, the chip doesn’t fall far from the block, and that adage fits Derrick to a ‘T’. He is the brother of reggae legend, Mr. ‘Picture On The Wall’ Freddy McKay, and Derrick’s daughter, Kishna Scott and nephew, Marlon McClean, are also singers.

Musically, Derrick’s aim is to reach Christians and all lovers of gospel music around the world. He has performed at churches and functions all over South Florida, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Georgia. He had previously released one single ‘Weeping And Wailing’ followed by his debut album ‘Preacher Nowadays’, then an EP ‘Waiting Patiently’. Now ‘On A Mission’, is his new sophomore released album, it continues to spread the work of the missionary to the masses.

‘On A Mission’ is a 10 track CD that testifies to the grim living conditions in the world today, it features 2 traditional medleys, ‘Across The Bridge’ and ‘Zion’; the perennial ‘Amazing Grace’, and a sacred interpretation to the established ‘Have I Told You Lately’. The other songs are originals – songs of warning like ‘What A Weeping’ and ‘No Generation Curse’ and songs of praise and worship such as ‘God Have Your Back’ and ‘A Stranger’ – all composed by the Apostle Derrick Scott.

“The mission right now” says Derrick,“ is to send a message through my music, to uplift the spirit of the people and bring an awareness of the almighty to their hearts. That’s why I focus on the melody and the music to go with the lyrics so I can reach the young and the old. Even if I am covering a traditional song, I do it with a beat and melody that everyone can relate to, and once the music appeals to young people, they will get the message in the lyrics. So far it’s working; everywhere I perform people are buying my CD.”

He continued, “I used to listen to my brother a lot and to other singers like Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and John Holt, so I created my own style from their influence.” When Derrick migrated to South Florida, he started singing at El Shadi Pentecostal church where the members and pastors encouraged him and he has not stop moving up and moving on with his missionary work since then.
